Redbelt

Posted in Movie Reviews at 6:55 am by murtza

I was really excited about watching this movie. Mamet is good at his craft, I love martial arts, Randy Couture is in the movie as well, all in all it promised to be a film I would enjoy. I would be lying if I said that I liked it. The plot was weak as were the characters. The ending was unintelligent, cliche and melodramatic. The action sequences were not very well shot/edited. The acting was reasonable in most cases, but that did not even come close to making up for the slew of other shortcomings of the movie. Mr. Mamet your work was truly disappointing.

Bloody Sunday

Posted in Movie Reviews, Life at 9:06 pm by murtza

I liked this movie. It was well shot and gave the documentary/reality feel. It was about the Bloody Sunday incident which involved the British army killing 13 Irish demonstrators in the city of Derry. Watching this movie I can’t but think about what America and NATO is doing in Iraq and Afghanistan. Ivan Cooper the MP from Derry says at the end of the movie that this violent action by the British army would result in large numbers of recruits for the IRA which would earn the Brits a world of hurt. He was right when he said that, and that’s exactly what happened. Well, the US and its Allies are doing thousands of times worse things in those poor countries, and then they are surprised by the rise of extremist groups. This world is a sad place, doomed to be manipulated and ruled by unethical bigots only concerned about money and power.

Thirteen Ghosts

What a colossal waste of time. The movie was a predictable, crappy, not scary, corny mess. Given the percentage of movies that I don’t like I’m not sure why I watch so many of them. I really should stop. I really should…

The Game

Posted in Movie Reviews at 10:49 am by murtza

Watched “The Game” on yesterday night. It’s from 1997. I thought that I had heard good things about it. After watching it I have to believe that I was wrong. The plot was inane, the acting was okay, the characters were not believable. I am surprised that actors like Sean Penn and Michael Douglas would sign up for some movie like this. There were so many plot holes in the movie that I will not even go there. Also, the idea that a brother can think that using his father’s suicide as means to make his elder brother do the same is a good birthday present seems, at the very least, unlikely. The idea that the elder brother also thinks it was all in good fun is even more improbable. This movie was a colossal waste of time.

Mr. Woodcock

Not the best movie in the world, but hell it did make me laugh a few times. The humor was crass, the ending was the usual crap - though I have to say Thornton falling flat on his face was kind of funny. I would not classify watching this movie as a complete waste of time.

The Dark Knight - again

Posted in Movie Reviews, Life at 11:23 pm by murtza

Just came back from the movies. Went with my wife to watch Tropic Thunder, it was sold out so we watched The Dark Knight instead. I had seen it already, but my wife had not. I actually enjoyed it more the second time around. My wife liked it too. It was a fun night out. Abba looked after the boys while we were gone - that was very brave and kind of him. Did not work out today - I really need to get to the gym tomorrow…

CJ7

Not a bad movie. It had some scenes that were identical to scenes from “Shaolin Soccer” and “Kung Fu Hustle” but it was still entertaining. My son actually sat through the whole movie, that’s something. I think that Stephen Chow is a talented filmmaker. The movie was a fun romp about a poor boy and an alien dog. The characters were cartoonish, and the plot was all over the place. I guess this should really not be a good movie, yet I did enjoy it most of the time.

Shaun of the Dead

I had already seem most of this movie on cable already but after watching “Hot Fuzz” I figured I should watch it again. It was not as good as I remembered it, but it was still pretty good. Definitely entertaining and fun. My wife and I both enjoyed it. I generally dislike zombie movies but this one was fun to watch.

Thunderbolt and Lightfoot

This is a 1974 movie, and I thought it would be good; after all it has Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges in it. I was wrong. The pace of the movie was really slow. The characters were two dimensional. The plot was predictable and unintelligent. The humor was flat. All in all, pretty much a waste of time. I expect better from Mr. Eastwood.

Le Scaphandre et le Papillon

Posted in Movie Reviews, Life at 8:29 pm by murtza

Watched “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.” It was a good movie, though not my kind of movie. The acting was well done, actually all aspects of the movie were well done. It’s hard to comment on the dialog since my French is not what it used to be 28 years ago. The scene where the doctor stitches up his eye is rather disturbing. I guess the message of the movie was, don’t get a stroke because not everyone has a book deal.
